Written and directed by Gregory Nava, the film follows the life and career of Tejano music star Selena Quintanilla-Pérez who was murdered, at the age of 23, by Yolanda Saldívar, friend and president of her fan club.

SELENA (1997) stars Jennifer Lopez in her breakout role as Selena, Edward James Olmos, Jon Seda, Lupe Ontiveros, Jackie Guerra, Jacob Vargas, and more.

Last week, I spoke with director Gregory Nava who is very grateful he had the opportunity to give Jennifer Lopez a chance to find her success in film and especially in the music industry and he said: “You know that Latinos are 35% of the moviegoing audience and Hollywood still doesn’t like making movies with us or about us or giving big roles ti us. We have to fight for those roles and opportunities and when we do, Latinas like Jennifer Lopez happen.”

SELENA (1997) will be viewable as Original Theatrical Version or the Extended Cut – Both in HD/Blu-ray. The disc comes with special features that includes a Documentary “Selena, Queen of Tejano”; Making of Selena: 10 Years Later; Outtakes; and the Theatrical Trailer (HD).

 More about the film

The nuts and bolts of the irresistibly danceable music called Tejano are pop, rock, polka, R&B and Latin influences. To millions of fans, there’s another vital ingredient: the dynamic singer Selena.

Selena is the vibrant story of the Grammy®-winning singer whose life ended at its creative peak. Pulsating with Selena’s voice on the soundtrack, the film is bracingly authentic. In the title role, Jennifer Lopez powerfully captures the warmth and electricity of a beloved entertainer. Edward James Olmos, Jon Seda and others also shine in “a poignant, heartwarming movie that deserves a standing ovation” (Jules Peimer, WKDM-RADIO/NEW YORK).
