The Brazilian film I’M STILL HERE (“Ainda Estou Aqui”, original title) expands nationwide in theaters on February 7.

The film, which received 3 Oscars nominations: Best Film, Best Actress and Best International Film, is a cinematographic adaptation of the autobiographical book by Marcelo Rubens Paiva, which narrates the moving trajectory of his mother, Eunice Paiva, during the military dictatorship in Brazil.

Brazil, 1971. Brazil faces the tightening grip of a military dictatorship. Eunice Paiva, a mother of five children, is forced to reinvent herself after her family suffers a violent and arbitrary act by the government. Based on Marcelo Rubens Paiva’s memoir, this story portrays an important part of Brazil’s hidden history.

Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres plays Eunice, and veteran Brazilian actress Fernanda Montenegro plays Eunice, in the character’s more mature phase. Selton Mello plays Congressman Rubens Paiva. The cast also includes Dan Stulbach, Camila Márdila, Thelmo Fernandes, Marjorie Estiano, Maeve Junkings, and more. The adapted screenplay was written by Murilo Hauser and Heitor Lorega and won an award at the Venice Film Festival this year.

I had the opportunity to sit down with director Walter Salles and actress Fernanda Torres to talk abut the film.
