The 2022 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, reached its third day of virtual movie premieres and what a wild ride it was. Let’s just say I was so far away from being ready for everything I would be watching.
From NANNY to GOOD LUCK TO YOU, LEO GRANDE and RESURRECTION, every single one of these movies were a total blast, a true once-in-a-life-time experience, and the kind of entertainment that makes participating in such a festival worth every penny.
So here’s my little recap of Day 3, or as I’m calling it right now, my favorite day so far.
NANNY (Director: Nikyatu Jusu)
Nikyatu Jusu’s NANNY is more than a movie, it is an entire cinematographic experience – and by far my favorite movie out of Sundance. It tells the story of an immigrant Senegalese woman named Aisha (Anna Diop) who’s hired as a nanny for the only child of a rich New York family, and who’s being haunted by visions and dreams she cannot understand.
Anna Diop gives a breathtaking, absolutely spellbinding and award-worthy performance as Aisha, while Jusu’s cinematography, use of light and African culture creates one of the most memorable stories you’ll see this year. NANNY is an absolute must watch.
GOOD LUCK TO YOU, LEO GRANDE (Director: Sophie Hyde)
Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack star in this absurdly sweet and sexy romantic comedy about a middle-age woman finally breaking free from shame and years of sexual discontentment. With the exception of a handful of scenes, most of the movie happens inside a hotel room, however it does give apple space and time for the characters to grow.
RESURRECTION (Director: Andrew Semans)
Where do I even start? RESURRECTION is an absolutely insane film with a jaw-dropping performance by Rebecca Hall – and an even crazier ending. You just have to watch it to know what I’m talking about.
